In Tornado Alley, there is no time for Oprah

Hope my local f-list people weathered the storms last night. I was awake until 2 trying to decide if the tornado warnings were going to make it to me or not. Turned into a not. But this meant that I watched an awful lot of late night TV in nearly vain hope that the weather coverage would be adequate.

DC weather folks just don't get it.

TORNADOS are not to be fucked with. (And not only because the logistics of said fucking would be problematic at best...) I do not need live traffic updates at 0100 with camera feeds from an empty road while shoved into the corner is the miniscule radar picture showing unreadable details and a red splotch. Show me the affected counties, show me the storm path. DO NOT cut away so I can watch Oprah get off on standing on stage with Cher and Tina Turner. Do not cut away to Inside Edition for the Top Ten Buffest Hollywood couples. You DO NOT stop showing the weather updates until the fucking (or non-fucking) tornado is out of the decidedly fucked area.

Let's send all weather people for 3 years to Tornado Alley. Let's have them live through several real, mind-numbing F3, F4, or F5s. Let's see what happens when they can see the storm coming over the horizon and know that in a couple of hours the wrath of god is going to descend and there is NOTHING they can do about it but warn people. Somewhere where suddenly nobody cares about the camera on the overpass because you're too busy hoping your car doesn't come crashing into your living room while you are running into the basement with blankets, flashlights and a battery powered radio. Back home, we get live Weather Service updates even DURING the weather reports on the news. Because in Tornado Alley, it takes less than 60 seconds to lose your home, your car, your job, and your entire town.

Bet when they got back here, they would be a little more humble, a little more grateful, and a hell of a lot more thorough with the reports.

Draco Malfoy as Hamlet

GO GO GO GO GO GO GO GO GO GO GO

go

Go see Hamlet at the Shakespeare Theatre. Draco Malfoy is terrific!

Ok, So it isn't really Draco, but my GOD that young man who plays the Prince has brought us a performance to be rivaled through the ages. It is a performance that only works in the context of this particular production- which is a much more rare feat than you might imagine. Set this in the 40's and he'da been smacked by his mother, set his performance in the "correct" era and he would have been so far out of place that you might as well break into HELLO DOLLY when the ghost reappears. But for this production: fabulous, amazing, drooooooollll... He is twitchy, neurotic, emo-esque, angst filled and powerful beyond belief. You could feel the hormonal/emotional/rational war going on within him- could feel the privledged life he had led, could see it not only in the staging and the set, but in his reactions to those around him. He was petulant, he threw honest to god tantrums. And he fucking NAILED "to be or not to be". I almost started to applaud when he was done, as if he had just sung an aria. And I suppose he had, at that.

And here's what I mean about Draco Malfoy: http://www.shakespearetheatre.org/plays/photos.aspx?id=103

Also, get your season ticket to next year's shows. If you re under 35, you can get all 8 shows for $125. That's less than 20 bucks a show- that's almost the price of a movie- that's INFLUCKINGSANE!!

Strange- things seemed to be so relatively calm today. My co-workers were silent- in fact, many of them weren't even in the office. As I am wrapping up my final days of employment, I especially enjoyed the solitude and the quiet. The only down side was when Joe came running in screaming something about brain-sucking monsters. But then, Joe has always had a wicked sense of humor. I told him to shut up, pushed him out of my office, locked the door, and continued on my project. I've only recently emerged from my self-imposed cloister to scrounge the internet...

Poor Joe. I'm guessing he's been brain-sucked by now. Certainly his cheeky hammering on the door has stopped. I'm too afraid to look out of the window. I'm glad, however, to see that at least some of my friends have made it. I hope the power holds out.
